In the Music Entertainment business there are so many red flags that an up and coming company has to be aware of; plagiarism being one of the main issues in the music industry. There is always at least one musician/producer that believes that they can create original music, but in all actuality, there isn’t a song that has not been produced or recorded. Every song has some type of inspiration or meaning to it; whether it is a song that was produced in the 60’s or just a snippet from a track that was electronically created, all the songs that flood the various radio stations all have some meaning behind them.
Recently artist Robin Thicke, Pharrell Williams, and T.I. were sued for using Marvin Gaye’s song ‘Got to Give it Up’ as the root to their song. I took the initiative to do the research myself to see if the both songs were even remotely close. From a personal perspective, I believe that Pharrell could have done a better job with this song considering his history of producing for other artists-JayZ, Nelly, T.I. etc, I know for sure that if more time was put into this particular track, they would not be dealing with such issues like this one.
Unlike Robin Thicke using some of the ideas that were used in Marvin Gaye’s song, Michael Jackson decided to completely buy all the rights to the Beetles music collection for the price of . There was a total of 200 songs that were written from this group; keep in mind that this particular group made an impressive mark in the music industry for years, and to this day their music is still being played, and sampled. Although Michael Jackson before he died was considered to be $22 million in debt from a previous lawsuit; $500 million total, is still respectively thought to be a billionaire.
According Renee Quinn, just producing music and signing a record deal is not where the money is; buying the rights to all songs whether it comes from another artist or the individual themselves is what will put you in a different financial bracket.
