As singers, songwriters, and producers we all create music
with the intention to publish and get it out to the world. This blog will
explain different steps to take that will allow you to create, publish, and
distribute you product. First, before any publication is done, your product
needs to be copyrighted to make sure you get all the credit for your music.
Copyright also protects your work from being stolen or replicated. You can fill
out the form to register on the copyright website, and it usually cost anywhere
from $35-$65.
Once your done it would be wise to register your work with a
performing rights organization such as BMI or ASCAP. I recently did some
research on BMI and found out that it is one of the best ones to use. BMI makes
sure all of your royalties are paid out. BMI represents more than 7.5 million
musicals created by more than 600,000 producers and musicians.
Distributing music is actually easier then we think. A few
steps to take to reach out to the popular digital distribution companies like
Rhapsody, Amazon music, and iTunes; is to simply establish an account with some
of the big independent companies that already have an affiliation with the
distribution companies like TuneCore and CD Baby.
CD Baby one I recommend only charges $49.00 for a CD and
only takes 9% for each sell you make. After which CD Baby automatically
delivers your music to the major distribution companies. TuneCore a similar
company distributes your music for a yearly fee, but give you a 100% of your
sales back to you. If you’re a start-up
artist CD Baby would be your best bet, since your not going to be making a load
of sales its a lot safer to go with CD baby.
